4 . Easier access to the eastern areas of Manhattan and The Bronx
is needed and will aid in the growth of these communities . Improved service on the Pelham Line should stimulate devel opment in the East Bronx areas served by that line . This portion of The Bronx has areas with great potentialities for industrial growth and other areas suitable for development as residential and recreational centers . Direct service for the Dyre Avenue Line should similarly stimulate growth along its route . There is great development now going on along the East Side of Manhattan , centering around housing projects downtown and the United Nations in the midtown zone which should be very beneficial to the city at large .
5 . The transfer connection between the Second Avenue Trunk
Line and the Third Avenue Elevated at 149th Street and the additional subway facilities to serve the East Side of Manhattan will permit the demolition of the Third Avenue Elevated which is uneconomical to operate , ugly , and a hindrance to the mod ernization of a grand old Avenue and its abutting streets .
