72 LAWS OF NEW MEXICO :

Whereas : no provision has been made for honoring the brave victims who have perished in the various wars with the savage Indians surrounding us , and this Legislative Assembly desires that a slab perpetuating the memory of those be included in the monument ; therefore

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of

İNew Mexico :

Sec . 1. That the sum of one thousand eight hundred dollars be appropriated out of any territorial funds not otherwise appropriated , to be applied to the completion of the said monument ; provided , the committee hereby

appointed as the monument board , and by this act author Commission - ized and required to enter into a contract with a contract

or , shall be composed of the Hon . Secretary of the Ter ritory of New Mexico , the Hon , Treasurer of the Terri tory , and the Hon . Judge of Probate of the county of Santa , the said contract to provide that the monument shall be completed for the said sum of money , and to stipulate as hereinafter required of the contractor , and that the slabs shall be engraved as follows :

On the front slab : Erected by the people of New Mexico , through their Legislatures of 1866-7-8 . May the Union be perpetual .

On the second slab : To the heroes of the Federal ar my who fell at the battle of Valverde , fought with the rebels February 21 , 1862 .

On the third slab : To the heroes of the Federal army who fell at the battles of cañon del Apache and Pigeon's Ranch , ( Glorieta ) fought with the rebels March 28 , 1862 , and to those who fell in the battle fought with the rebels at Peralta , April 15th , 1862 .

On the fourth slab : To the heroes who have fallen in
